calories needed to maintain weight

Found this interesting, I can never count calories well though. I should take a stab at it one day since I seem to eat somewhat similarly every day.

Determine which of the following describes you. Then multiply your current weight by the number indicated and you have a good starting point as to how many calories you can eat to maintain your current weight. If you fall somewhere between the levels adjust the number accordingly.

12) You Exercise: Almost Never
13.5) You Exercise: Lightly 3-5 days a week
15.5) You Exercise: Moderately, 3-5 days a week
17) You Exercise: Vigorously, 6-7 days a week
19) You Exercise: Vigorously, daily and you have a physical job

I don't think I changed my caloric intake much all of last year but I was exercising much more. I lost about 10 pounds in 2007. The initial drop was Oct-Dec 2006 I lost 15 or so in those few months.
Maybe this weekend I'll figure out about how many calories I'm eating currently. I mean Craig has his magic weight loss pills, I've got to do some homework to make sure I keep up.

I never said weight loss pill. It is a weight loss cleanse. I think it has items that help prepare your body for weight loss. Colon cleanse items, with kidney and liver cleanses. A little known fact is that you need your liver to be clean to burn fat properly. One reason Atkins works so well is because the lack of wheat products takes the pressure off of your liver, which gives it an opportunity to funtion better. Not to mention loosening that impacted fecal matter from your colon. You know Elvis had 60 lbs of impacted matter when he died.

Link talking about it (the herb not Elvis): http://www.evitamins.com/product.asp?pid=2592

Elvis reference (it is disputed as an urban legend, but so is Big Foot and we all know he lives in Warren County):

The real question is could I be disqualified from the Biggest loser for juicing.

OK. So a bit of reverse engineering on this and I should reach my goal eventually.

I'm going to say 175 would be my goal weight. Then use a multiplier of 16 as I can't be certain how Vigorously I'm exercising.
That gives me 2800 calories to work with given my current activity level if I'd want to maintain a weight of 175.

Seeing how a burrito at Chipotle is north of 1000 calories I'm guessing I'll have to learn how to make a healthier burrito with fewer calories at home, rather than allowing myself to return to my Burrito Lunches once I hit goal weight.

That calculation looks reasonably close for me. Somewhere around 3500 or so to maintain, but of course I am trying to lose, so I have been shooting for 2500 or so each day. When I have the time, I like to burn at least 4500 and stick with the 2500, giving me a 2000 calorie deficit for the day. If 3500 calories equals a pound (as they say it does), then I should lose half a pound a day while doing that kind of thing. Unfortunately, it is hard to do that every day with all the other stuff on the plate. But I am willing to do one pound a week until May, then go for it that month. Of course more will not meet with disapproval.

In the case of a pound per week weight loss, that works out to a needed calorie deficit of 500 calories per day.
So 500 less that the calculated maintenance number.

I doubt the weight loss curve is linear here. Shawn's 2000 calorie deficit would equal 4 pounds a week. At that rate he'd have to recalculate every couple weeks.

Come on Shawn. Prove that it's linear!

At that rate Shawn will be an Ethiopian (no offense to Ethiopians) by the Mooseman.

I marked my calendar up today.
Every Saturday one pound less than the previous week.
This will help me realize if I'm falling behind. Then I can adjust what's going on.
I'll be very pleased if I run ahead of schedule.

Ethiopians are good marathoners! I would be happy to join their ranks.

And I will do my best to prove the linear nature of the weight-loss curve. I think as long as you are above your ideal weight, it will be pretty linear, but as you approach that, you might find that it's either harder to be 500 under or you will start consuming your muscle mass, which isn't useful for our goals. I could probably stand to consume a little of my muscles, but I keep trying to make them bigger, so that seems counterproductive. 'Course I'm only doing about 20-30 minutes of lifting each time I go, so it's not like I'm gonna be competing in the World's Strongest Man or anything...although I would like to try those Atlas stones just to see what we're dealing with.

At any rate, I'm shooting for 2 pounds a week for 5 weeks, then maybe I'll slow down to one pound a week (or none), then kick it back up to 4 pounds a week in May. I should follow Matt's lead and mark the calendar with each week's goal, then make it. I'm pretty sure I succeeded this week. The scale at the Y was broken, so I didn't get an official weigh-in, but my home scale was showing 256 this morning (down 4 pounds). I hope it's right.

Have you guys bought your wet suit yet? If you're thinking of going with Desoto you can save on the tax if you order on-line (or at least from the catalog) desotosport.com
For those of us...um...with size constrains the two piece seems to be the way to go.

Never thought in my life I'd be wrapped in rubber but there you go.
