Kinzua Tango

How are we looking for this? We have awhile before the signup deadline/price increase. We just haven't mentioned it in awhile and time seems to move quickly.

I am still interested. How does one train for canoeing without canoeing? There isn't any canoe machine at the gym. My dumbbell juggling should help a lot, but I think there are some specific muscle groups that should be attacked before an all-out 8-mile sprint is attempted. I would imagine the rowing machine would be good, though there are a lot more legs in that than you need, and probably just facedown dumbbell rows would help. What are we targeting here? Delts, lats, bi's, tri's, some twisting core muscles, and maybe a little for the pecs (for the return stroke). I don't have any way to practice actually paddling a canoe. Maybe I'll send out an e-mail on a local listserve and see if anyone would let me borrow a canoe or kayak for a month or two. I've always wanted a kayak, ever since I was a raft guide, but I never seem to have enough time to make practical use of it, so it seems like a strange investment. I could rent one every time I needed it probably for years and still not approach the cost of buying one. Maybe I'll do that in June and July. Once a week or so real paddling adventures, with more juggling in between. There are a couple of small lakes where I can do that here.

This is all assuming that I am one of the canoeists, which we obviously haven't decided. I still don't think I would be much help anywhere other than the swim, and questionably at that.

Should we start to settle on event distribution yet, or do you want to wait a while to see how we're all doing with our skills?

My only question is would be to establish who we still have? Casey sounded gun ho and maybe his brother (?). Let's review our assets. Me, Shawn, Matt, Casey and Casey's brother(?). I'm still willing, but would like to see at least 4 absolutelies. We can hold off a while longer and see who is up to it. Maybe recheck mid June or so.

I am still in for the Tango. I have been checking in on the blog periodically, but have not been contributing. I have been really busy with the new job, night classes (MBA) and helping coach Riley's t-ball team. Unfortunately, none of that is interesting enough to share on the blog. I have been trying to keep up with the running, but it has been sporadic. I seem to have found new motivation and have really started knuckling down again this week though.

Regarding the Tango...I am not sure, but I believe the canoe leg is a ride down-river from the tailwaters. If that is the case, the current will do most of the work for whomever is in the boat. Also, as it looks right now, my brother is out. He is still planning on doing the whole thing solo. I am not rooting against him, but reality tells me he still may reconsider. He has said that he would like to tag along with our group though...just to have someone to keep pace with.

I am hoping to take responsibility for the half-marathon leg. I certainly don't mind taking both of the running legs as far as that goes. I am game for the orienteering leg as well. Keep in mind that the canoe and the orienteering legs require two participants. The swim also requires a safety canoe attendant.

It may not hurt to at least start defining who we think will do each leg.

Okay, I am thrilled that someone is willing to run. I still wonder how the safety canoe from the swim moves to the tailwaters, or do we need two separate canoes? We should have at least 75 minutes between the swim and canoe portions, which is plenty of time to move it, and with orienteering in there, it could be 90 minutes or more, depending on the difficulty of that section. I am assuming the swim ends somewhere handy so the canoe doesn't have to paddle 2 miles back to the car or something. If I am right, then I would think I could be one of the (or the only) safety canoeists, and one of the river canoeists. I guess I should just call Thad to learn these details.

And no offense to Casey, but if I do the river section, I plan to go much faster than the current. It would be cool to know which side of the islands to go on and where the channel is all the way down, but that's not too tough to figure out.

So...all we need is a biker, a swimmer, a second orienteering pro (or if Casey thinks he has a handle on the concepts, an orienteering apprentice) and a second canoeist. I assume Craig would be willing to do the canoe with me, and possibly one other part...and Matt should also be able to do any given piece or two by then, so even if it is only we four, I think we have a complete team. If we get into a pinch, I am sure I could recruit somebody who would actually be good down here. If Jerry could do the bike, that would be cool. He likes to bike.

So picture this...Casey puts us in the lead with the half marathon, Jerry extends it with the mountain bike, Matt swims, while most of the competition is still biking, and Craig and I paddle the safety canoe for Matt (who never needs it), then Craig could jump out and orient with Casey, Casey could run, Craig and I get into the canoe at the dam and off we go to meet Matt and Casey (and all the other screaming fans) at the finish!

How's that sound?

Hey, it's just one possible scenario. I'd like like to see others.

Can we have a 3rd party be in the safety canoe? If so I'm guessing that may make things easier for us. I'm sure we could find somebody.

I'm going to see Jerry and Todd over Memorial Day weekend. I know Jerry has been in "spinning classes" at the Y. So I'll try to inspire him to join in.
I'm not sure where Todd is with everything either. I'll be able to see where he is at with all this as well.

No worries Shawn. I like your scenario. And besides, with all the dumbell juggling you are doing, I fully expect you to be capable of paddling hard enough for me to water ski behind you.

I am pretty comfortable using a compass, but I can't say that I am anywhere close to being an expert orienteerer. Not sure if this will be an advantage or not, but I have hunted up in the Rim Rock area for a lot of years and am pretty familiar with that part of the ANF.

I would love to say I will be in good enough shape to do both legs of the run and also the orienteering leg too. However, I don't think we should count on it. Maybe we can get Jerry to do the mountain bike and Michelle to do the 4.5 mile leg.

Has anyone been out to the web site to check the updates? In the FAQs, the rule for the swimming is that the person in the water cannot touch the safety canoe. Each time they do, they will be docked 3 hours. They are however, permitted to go to shore and rest as often as needed. I don't anticipate Matt will be needing to do either though. In fact, I fully expect to be water skiiing behind him as well.

Casey is right about both run legs and orienteering. He would be getting close to Marathon level doing all three.

The Tango could take from 6 hours to 10 hours. Hopefully we could see something with an 8 in front of it. I am assuming four participants, so, with two people having to do canoe and orienteering, we are talking about 2.5 hours each.

I will venture to say that unless you are training hard to run, that the 13.1 and 4.5 mile runs will be hard to add to any other leg.

Maybe we should get what people really want to do then go from there. If I had my ultimate choice I would choose the bike, but I understand I probably run more than most so I would also run. Now the canoe sounds fun, but it may be an upper body man's sport, which I have never claimed to be, even though I probably can hold my own.

What I am saying is the order of these events don't work for me, maybe they will let us move them around to accomadate our team, and ultimately each one of these events individually is a twelve week training plan. Also we need a female involved to get us into some coed division, this could be to our advantage, at least looking better.
