Bummer

The relay option for Mooseman is no longer an option. I'm not sure what to think yet.
It certainly makes me appreciate the last 2 years a bit more. Those were some good times.
I'll be talking with the relay people and see if we can't come up with a plan B.

If you want to read the thread check it out here. Keith Jordan is the race director FYI.

so sad! Now I'll never be able to overcome the "last out the water stigma!" (sigh)

I am so bummed. I was really looking forward to swimming for a relay in 2010!!! REALLY bummed. WHY??? :(

So now what---take on the entire thing as my first race ever? It just doesn't seem feasible. It doesn't have a sprint does it?

MJ, it is my always-respected opinion that an International or Olympic distance race is not too big for your first tri. The Mooseman was in fact my first race, after having watched one or two elsewhere. Since swimming is an area in which you are already comfortable, you are unlikely to die (unlike me, who was apparently fairly likely to die). Once you are out of the water, you just go at whatever speed you can go. I guarantee there will be slower people than you, so it isn't like you will personally be adding overtime to the police force's books. If you have to walk some of the run, no biggie. Lots of people do.

It is also my opinion that doing the bigger race feels a little more like an accomplishment, rather than saying to yourself "I did all that training for 90 minutes?" It is totally feasible.

Go for it! You are woman. I hear you roar!

ROAR--okay so maybe I need to change my mindset. I'll just have to keep training I guess.

how long is the swim? Run is 10k...lots of hills? and Bike...how long and I know there is at least one dreaded hill.....

Swim is 1500m. No hills!

Bike is challenging. Looking at the Kinzua Classic Ride.

I think that would be a good comparison. (I haven't done it, if someone has, feel free to chime in)

Run course. I think the course you and Jerry ran the other weekend with Genine is more difficult than the Mooseman run.
I wonder how the hill profile of running up Hemlock compares to the Mooseman run.

You could do it. Jerry could too. Get him swimming with a pull buoy! He just has to survive the swim!

That's right, there are no hills in the swim, although that would probably play to may advantage.

The run is also pretty easy, at least compared to anything else I have done. I think Hemlock is worse than the Mooseman.

The bike is fine. It does have one steep hill, but everyone has to go up it, and it isn't that long. You can't suffer hills anywhere near as poorly as I do unless you are towing 100 pounds, so don't worry about it. There is also plenty of time to prepare. Sign up now and you will have lots of motivation to train!

The hill couldn't have been that bad, I don't even remember it. I did an Olympic for my first race ever--a super hilly race in CA called Wildflower. I was under prepared on the swim and bike (I was not from a swimming background like you Michelle), but I survived the swim, had fun but went a little slower than normal training pace on the bike and did a walk/run on the hills. It was tough but was also a blast and a good but manageable challenge for the first.

Michelle, You can DEFINITELY conquer the Mooseman as a full triathlon! I had only done 1 sprint prior to doing the full Moose this past June. You can come out to NJ and do that same sprint race with me in June next year to work out some nerves. It's in May and close to our house.

In terms of the Mooseman, here is how I see it. You can already swim the mile distance. The open water thing is mind over matter and you are strong enough to overcome that obstacle. Heck...if I can do it, you can do it! And you have perfect training conditions around Warren to simulate the bike & run course. If you start now, you have plenty of time to structure a training program to work up to the bike/run distances. And as Shawn said, there is ZERO shame in walking parts of the run. It's all about crossing the finish line. Nothing more than you knowing that you gave your personal best.

DO IT!!! DO IT!!! DO IT!!!
(How's that for some peer pressure...er, I mean cheerleading!)

Sooo---how do I sign up? And do I do it now?

Swim - Cold, Really Cold! Why did I decide to do this cold!

Bike - One bad Hill, not as long as Kinzua Klassic hills, but very steep. The rollers on the back side, before Matt's place get you, but managable. You won't be happy about doing the hill in the Mooseman, mostly because it is so quick after the swim, but it won't kill you either.
Actually the worse part of the hill was helping another guy with his seat.

Run - Hill is not bad, steep, but short. I never walked. I was in better shape in Morgantown that year and walked the hill in Morgantown, NOW That was a Bad Hill!

Come on, sign up today!
