I'm not sure what your picture is supposed to show. Do you suppose one of those white water rubber rafts would be race legal? If so could all the team members row it to the finish rather than just 2?
When we hit the rapids, the rear of the canoe was closer to shore. This coupled with 2-3 foot swells sealed our fate. Last year's rapids were 1 foot at most.

I could put the arrow in the middle of the rapids pointing at the island to show how Shawn did it a couple years ago.
